Grind size controls how fast water pulls flavor from coffee. Too fine and it over-extracts (bitter); too coarse and it under-extracts (sour, weak). Matching grind to brewer fixes both.

Grind size by method

  • Cold brew / French press: coarse (like sea salt)
  • Pour-over / drip: medium (like sand)
  • AeroPress: medium-fine
  • Espresso: fine (like powdered sugar)
  • Turkish: extra-fine (like flour)

Reading your cup

Tastes bitter and harsh? Grind coarser. Tastes sour and thin? Grind finer. Adjust one step at a time. Pair the right grind with the right coffee-to-water ratio and your coffee transforms.

Freshly ground beats pre-ground

Grinding right before you brew is the biggest flavor upgrade after buying fresh beans — pre-ground coffee stales in days. Our grind guide has a visual reference for every brewer.
